# Databricks information_schema

> The Databricks-shaped information_schema views available in SparkSQL and Databricks compatibility modes.

In [SparkSQL and Databricks compatibility modes](https://docs.firebolt.io/reference-sql/spark/overview.md), a supported `information_schema` view follows [Databricks' `INFORMATION_SCHEMA`](https://docs.databricks.com/aws/en/sql/language-manual/sql-ref-information-schema): its column names and order. Open-source Spark has no `information_schema`, so both modes use the Databricks shape.

## Supported views

* `information_schema.catalogs` ([Databricks reference](https://docs.databricks.com/aws/en/sql/language-manual/information-schema/catalogs)).
* `information_schema.catalog_privileges` ([Databricks reference](https://docs.databricks.com/aws/en/sql/language-manual/information-schema/catalog_privileges)).
* `information_schema.columns` ([Databricks reference](https://docs.databricks.com/aws/en/sql/language-manual/information-schema/columns)).
* `information_schema.information_schema_catalog_name` ([Databricks reference](https://docs.databricks.com/aws/en/sql/language-manual/information-schema/information_schema_catalog_name)).
* `information_schema.key_column_usage` ([Databricks reference](https://docs.databricks.com/aws/en/sql/language-manual/information-schema/key_column_usage)). Always empty.
* `information_schema.routines` ([Databricks reference](https://docs.databricks.com/aws/en/sql/language-manual/information-schema/routines)). Always empty: built-in functions are not listed.
* `information_schema.schema_privileges` ([Databricks reference](https://docs.databricks.com/aws/en/sql/language-manual/information-schema/schema_privileges)).
* `information_schema.schemata` ([Databricks reference](https://docs.databricks.com/aws/en/sql/language-manual/information-schema/schemata)).
* `information_schema.table_constraints` ([Databricks reference](https://docs.databricks.com/aws/en/sql/language-manual/information-schema/table_constraints)). Always empty.
* `information_schema.table_privileges` ([Databricks reference](https://docs.databricks.com/aws/en/sql/language-manual/information-schema/table_privileges)).
* `information_schema.tables` ([Databricks reference](https://docs.databricks.com/aws/en/sql/language-manual/information-schema/tables)).
* `information_schema.views` ([Databricks reference](https://docs.databricks.com/aws/en/sql/language-manual/information-schema/views)).

Any `INFORMATION_SCHEMA` view not listed does not exist in these modes: querying it raises a "relation does not exist" error, even where Firebolt has a native view of that name.

## Addressing

A Databricks catalog is a Firebolt database:

* `INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES` and `system.INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES`: the current database.
* `<database>.INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES`: the named database.

## Notes

* Values carry Firebolt conventions, not Databricks': `columns.data_type` and `columns.full_data_type` return Firebolt type names (`INTEGER`, `TEXT`), and `views.view_definition` returns Firebolt DDL.
* `tables` and `schemata` list user objects only, never the system schemas.
* Databricks columns with no Firebolt source are `NULL`.
* A view cannot be created over a Databricks-shaped `information_schema` view, because the stored definition could not be re-resolved outside the dialect. Query it directly, or use `CREATE TABLE AS SELECT`.
